Shock Doctrine

During our discussion about the Shock Doctrine we heard different points of view. The first question was about if the Canadian economy is going towards monetarism. The group admitted that the economical model of Stephen Harper’s government is closer to the American model, but they can’t believe that we will have a monetarism model in Canada. In fact, the minority government that we have now can’t change the Canadian economy radically.

The second question was about if September 11 attacks was organized by the US government to make the war in Iraq acceptable by the American population. The group said that the first answer to the attacks was the Afghanistan war. The shock caused by September 11 surely helps the acceptance, but almost all the group didn’t agree to the conspiracy theory. Only one thinks that the American government organized September 11 attacks. About the war in Iraq, the group said that the government used the weapons of mass destruction to shock the population, so they will accept this war. The government knew that the population didn’t forget September 11 and that the weapons of mass destruction are a good link.

The third question was about the fact that China is now the most important source of importation for Canada in term of quantity. The group believe that this situation is due to the cheapness of the goods imported from China. One remembered that in the past a lot of things was made in Japan and now they are a big economical force. After that there was Taiwan and now is China. Because they are over a billion of Chinese and he thought that China will follow Japan, he was concern about the impact of China development on the environment and on the world economy.
